In general they are mainly intended for downsampling, where aliasing is a
problem. See http://wiki.panotools.org/?title=Aliasing

I guess most of the filters are of experimental nature. In this case they should
be removed from the final pano12 or at least hidden behind some expert switch in
PTGui. 

However, it would be interesting to have some speed/quality comparison like on
http://photocreations.ca/interpolator/index.html
