Subject:RE: HDR-Workflow: Vienna Metro Praterstern revisit

Thread:

Hello Bernhard,

Thanks for the great images, and for explaining some of your technique. I
have been exploring HDR panoramas using PhotoMatix for some time now, but am
very interested in some of these other tonemapping algorithms. I am just
wondering what software you used to apply the Photoreceptor algorithm. I
have been playing around with Artizen HDR, and am really impressed with the
tonemapping algorithms, but it lacks the 360-degree option to ensure the +/-
180 degree locations match up. So I have been seeing issues with different
values along the left/right resulting seam (though the nadir and zenith are
coming out great, which I had some issues with in PhotoMatix). How do you
use these (great) algorithms, and get over the wrap seam issues?

The photos look great, you have truly been a great progressor of HDR
photography in VR imagery. Thanks for all your contributions,

John

Subject: [PanoToolsNG] HDR-Workflow: Vienna Metro Praterstern revisit

Some of you may already know one of my favourite personal projects: The
documentation of the Vienna subway extension - a personal photography
milestone every time i visit the site. ;-)
This year, i worked with a relatively consistend HDR workflow and i'm
quite happy with the outcome.

Capture: Fuji S3 with Nikkor 10mm Fisheye, extended DR + 3x2 EV bracketing
HDR merging with Photomatix (it has to be said the the new ghost removal
works excellent)
Stitching: Control point creation with PTGui (intermediate tonemapped
images), stitching with Hugin
Tonemapping: Photoreceptor (binary from the "HDR-book")

Where possible, i did tonemapping before stitching. This divided the
stitching process in 2 different workflows:
Because of doing "automatic" tonemapping (letting decide the software
how much DR has to be mapped) i ended up with 2 types of panoramas
 - panoramas with sectors having evenly distributed lights and shadows
-> LDR stitching
 - panoramas with sectors not having full DR in one captured sector ->
HDR stitching

See the "2007" panoramas at:

I think, it's time now to re-work the older ones... :-\

Best regards
Bernhard
