Re: view point correction

Finding the optimum viewpoint parameters can be quite difficult for the
optimizer, it easily gets stuck in a local minimum.
I just tried to stitch a panorama where the optimizer failed to get a
good optimization; I finally managed to fix it with the following trick:
1. Set the pitch of the nadir image to -90, and the yaw to 0. Reset
the 5 viewpoint parameters of the nadir image to 0.
2. On the Optimizer tab, disable the optimization of yaw and pitch
of the nadir image and enable viewpoint optimization of the nadir image.
Enable 'use control points of:' for all images.
3. Run the optimizer
4. If the optimizer reports a good or 'not bad' result, it has
probably found the right position of the nadir image. Now enable yaw and
pitch optimization for the nadir image and run the optimizer again.
See the troubleshooting section at the bottom of
http://www.ptgui.com/examples/vptutorial.html
The idea behind this is the following: after optimization, the yaw,
pitch and roll represent the orientation of the nadir surface in the
panorama, and the VP Pan and VP Tilt parameters represent the angle of
the camera relative to that surface. In normal cases the nadir surface
is at approximately -90 degrees of pitch, and presetting that value
gives a good hint to the optimizer.
