| Subject: | Re: Fast Gigapixel Stitching on the Playstation 3 |
Thread:
Helmut,
This seems like a great leap forward, blending is definitely a major
bottleneck -- thanks for your efforts.
While your results are tremendous, I guess I'm confused about whether
it is your new algorithm or the PS3 that is responsible; I suspect its
mostly the algorithm. If I understood your comment later in this
thread, the bottleneck in your system is I/O speed, capped at about 30
MB/s. Disks speeds of 80-120 MB/s are fairly easy to attain on a
modern PC (and up to 800 MB/s are possible), and with Flash or RAM
disks seek times are very low. So even though the PS3 processor is 3-
10 times faster than a modern PC, maybe faster disks speeds would
offset some or all of that? Is it possible to try your code on a linux
or Windows PC? Or looking at it the other way around, has anyone tried
to benchmark Enblend or Smartblend on a PS3 vs. PC to assess the
performance advantage due to the PS3's processor?
Thanks,
Matt
