Optimizing fov is hardly necessary, but regard it as fine tuning to
guarantee the images align precisely around the stitching sphere.
(My lens parameters are evaluated from a photo of the stars).
Optimizing d and e would probably be beneficial, but 3 points per
seam would then be desirable.

Yes, make use of t1 and t2 points as and when appropriate. It wasn't
in the case of the images I was using.
