The mask tool is graphics based, not text based. Basically, the stitcher performs a dry run generating a panorama where each source image is replaced by a unique indexing color. This image can be edited in Photoshop/Gimp, to shift the seams (just paint the area green, where the green-indexed image should dominate, etc). The features of the original panorama remain visible by making this color image partially transparent. The color image can then be used in a second run of stitching as input information for seam placement.
The advantage to the old layer-style mode (edit alpha-masked layer, then collapse layers in Photoshop) is that you still get the full benefit of the multiresolution blend and the mask image can be reused if always the same areas (camera mount) should be masked, or if the stitching is repeated with different parameters. I will document all this is an upcoming article.
