PanoTools NG: Re: Re: I just don't get Facebook... Roger Howard 2012-Feb-16 20:00:59
Don't get me wrong - I'm not ready to abandon mailing lists (and yes, Hans,
I read and post via email). If my point wasn't clear, let me try again:

Each of these examples - mailing lists (whether accessible via email or a
Web UI it's still a mailing list), Web forums, Reddit, Twitter, Facebook -
are each quite different mediums that suit very different needs. Each
medium affects the qualities of the communications - whether it is more of
an exclusive club, more open to drive-by users, whether its amenable to
long-form messages that can easily turn into flamewars, or more concise
messaging that loses a lot of flavor; whether it easily integrates with
other content beyond plain text; whether the connections between users are
fleeting or more permanent, and whether those connections are organized
along temporary, topical, personal, or professional lines.

I like PanoToolsNG just the way it is - I have a fondness and affinity for
mailing lists. I haven't gotten into the Facebook forum for panos as a
discussion forum, but I do appreciate it as a medium for seeing
near-constant new examples of panoramas that I'd have to hunt down
otherwise. I use Twitter, mailing lists, Facebook, LinkedIn, and the rest
all very different - it's why each is thriving; they have different sweet
spots. But to suggest that *any* of them are valueless because you don't
use them is where I take exception; and my experience with Twitter and
Facebook are that I connect with and get to interact with incredibly
brilliant people every single day that I might otherwise not be able to; I
don't follow Ashton or Bieber, and I don't have many high school friends
pestering me.
