Roger -

Apple sells an iPad 2 Digital AV Adapter that has an Apple male 30-pin connector at one end and splits out the other end with a standard female HDMI socket and an Apple 30-pin female socket.  I have used this "dongle" on a current gen iPod and iPad.  It lists new at about $40 - but i got a refurb from Best Buy for about $25.  My iPad it says that the Adapter is not compatible, but it then goes ahead and works just fine.  This allows mirroring the idevice display and sound on the TV.

Controlling a TV from the iPad is harder, since it doesn't have an IR emitter  If a TV or other device has an network connection with a corresponding idevice app (such as the app provided by Roku for Roku receivers) then you can control the device via the network connection..  Samsung may have a similar app for some TVs - you will need to do an Internet search to see if such an app exists for a particular TV.  RedEye (thinkflood.com) makes a Mini IR emitter ($50) that plugs into an idevice headphone jack.  Other solutions may exist?

At the moment I can use my iPad to control my PC remotely, viewing the PC screen on the iPad's own display. With the HD TV (and sitting in the same room) I could use the iPad to control the TV display via the PC, but a direct link between iPad and TV would be a LOT simpler!
