PanoTools: RE: Re: PanoTools Funding Options Matthias Taugwalder 2006-May-24 21:44:39
In my opinion talking about money and funding is always toxin for open
source projects. But it has to be done. I saw some projects and lists which
nearly broke because of that.

Do not get me wrong: Many thanks for all who are contributing something to
the PanoTools group, thanks for Bert for the new page and to you, John, for
the managing it in the last few years. But PanoTools was and is still a
community with more than just a hand of members...

I agree, that mostly only a few people will do the work. But that does not
say that there is no need for a transparent communication of costs and
budget requirements to the other list members. Additionally to that, I think
regarding the huge amount of knowledge on this list from people of different
areas, including Web hosting and Web design services, at least several
alternatives could have been compared...

The sustainability of the PanoTools group has be secured, too. It is the
same as with software projects in bigger companies. There you have to
document everything you do and the project is distributed over several
people to assure that it can be proceeded if somebody quits the job or
something happens.

Perhaps an association or something like that could be helpful. I am not
talking about something like the IVRPA, it could be also free with voluntary
member fees. I would also spend, but I would like a transparent overview
over the costs and at least a discussion about possible alternatives...

Just my thoughts...

Best regards from Switzerland,

Matthias Taugwalder
