My proposal for a Yahoo group replacement is using a PHP (open source) forum
package and blend in the mailing list functionality.
The forum would have defined sections based on subject matter. A
corresponding mailing list would mirror the forum section it belonged to.
(sub-lists) If a member created a thread on the forum, a e-mail would be
sent to the subscribing members. Replies (forum or e-mail) would update the
thread. It will be a bit more structured then the openness we have with
Yahoo but in the long run the content will be easier to find and reuse.
This is a hot item with me because I will have to convert the Yahoo group
membership over to the new site and make it as painless as possible for
everyone.
