Yes, use Michel Thoby's advice. We panographers should be very happy
to have a former Spacecraft builder with some spare time on his hands!
(google "thoby nikkor" )

Also - from my experience - give yourself 2 or 3 hours. it takes
longer than you think. what you saw through to is metal, and you hear
it right away. however, you should saw mostly through, and then use a
knife.

I had a very funny time in the Nikon CZ headquarters - I brought my 5d
/ shaved nikkor in, and asked if they could clean the inside of the
lens, as i thought maybe some dust got inside. (it turns out that the
lens elements are sealed, and dust cannot get inside it from the front
of the lens, even through that tiny gap.) The guy there seemed very
unhappy about what I had done :-)))
