PanoTools:
E-Mail Abuse
John Spikowski 2006-Jul-12 23:12:46
In a attempt to save whatever privacy the members still have left, I have
disable the message archives to members only. This way non-members can't
snoop around in your Yahoo profile and pick apart pieces of information from
a VERY public service that is like a big piece of cheese to a rat.
What we do to protect your address:
Yahoo! Groups has built a system around the concept of preventing bulk
"harvesting" of email addresses. There are several protections in place:
* Non-members of a group never have access to the Members area.
* When members are given access to the Members area (a per-group
option set by the moderator), they can only see profile information you've
told us to display, and your truncated email address (e.g., "#removed#").
* Message archives on the Yahoo! Groups web site display truncated
email addresses (e.g., "#removed#").
* The Yahoo! Groups Abuse Team takes abuse complaints seriously and
will take action against abusers of the system.
I have contacted Yahoo groups customer support and filed a complaint against
the former moderators using the PanoTools member list to send unsolicited
e-mails to it's member base. As the above indicates, Yahoo take this
seriously and will take action.
I made it the top priority of managing the PanoTools list when it was
created that the privacy of it's members always comes first. Since I had no
say in this matter when the abuse / theft was taking place, I can only guess
the damage that has been done. I hope my actions to secure the member base
and return the group to panorama photography wasn't done to late and the
member base e-mails aren't already sold before Yahoo can prosecute the
abusers.
John
