is it possible to create panoramic image from command line only?

Hi everybody!
I am new to panoramic imagery all together. I've checked out a few
tools and PanoTools stuff is amazing! The quality surpases several (if
not all) commercial products that I've trialed. Anyways, allow me to
get back on-topic.
I want to create an online service that allows users to create
panoramic images automagically without (or with minimum) switches or
dials. The panoramic images are for property displays, so they'll
represent 360 degrees of a room.
I know that it's impossible to get it right all the time. Sometimes it
will fail. But I am wondering if it's possible to create decent
panoramic images with a set of command line utilities only. I'd run
them from a perl script and then display the output through a flash
player.
What do you all think?
