Christopher, USB suffers signalling problems when the cable length is too long. See http://www.usb.org/about/faq/ans5/ for a good quick reference. If your extender is "just a cable", you will probably have problems with lengths over 2m. Look for "active extenders", for example <http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.aspx?EDC=961892> http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.aspx?EDC=961892 that will amplify and re-time the USB signal. Best is to have a repeater every 3m or so. Note also that any USB connected "stuff" will have their electronics tied together by the USB cable. Be careful to plug everything into the same outlet, or even better, use isolated (non-grounded by design) power supplies for everything. I tend to use twisted-pair Ethernet whenever possible.
