Christopher,

USB suffers signalling problems when the cable length is too long. See
http://www.usb.org/about/faq/ans5/ for a good quick reference. If your
extender is "just a cable", you will probably have problems with lengths
over 2m. Look for "active extenders", for example
<http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.aspx?EDC=961892>
http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.aspx?EDC=961892 that will
amplify and re-time the USB signal. Best is to have a repeater every 3m
or so.

Note also that any USB connected "stuff" will have their electronics
tied together by the USB cable. Be careful to plug everything into the
same outlet, or even better, use isolated (non-grounded by design) power
supplies for everything.

I tend to use twisted-pair Ethernet whenever possible.

Regards,

Tom
