Erik,
I'm getting it.. I like it.. I realize it's not done but think I see where your going.. finish it!!!.. Some of the posters had issues with the spinning globe.. Tie it to what your looking at ..In other words If the image is static (not moving) then so is the global view.. If it's functioning in a relationship with the primary view screen the viewer will quickly figure out what your up to.. The only issue past that may be size to have it be a meaninful communication tool.. I like the hot spots.. I'm lauging as I type this.. If you were to mouse over the globe and it's realestate got larger in the screen while it was mouseovered so the viewer could get a temporary view of the larger picture that may be a meaningful addition..
The compass.. don't drop it.. inovative as a package..

Quite frankly...your ahead of your time in an effort to communicate.. Finish it.. let it in.. then tweek tweek tweek..I feel you have a good thing going.. your just a bit ahead of most folks.. That'll all sort itself out.. Your head works just fine..

Ain't Flash fun?

  Thanks Ken.

A serious problem is that people generally don not read instructions
at all, not even the most compact ones. People have expectations, and
if they are confronted with something that proves them wrong the will
be annoyed or uncomfortable. So they will leave the situation or
reject the object if they can.
A good interface will 'steer' or 'guide' visitors expectations, so
they are comfortable with what they encounter next. This guidance is a
step-by-step process, no single element can do it on its own.

I also have a plan to make a short animated introduction to VR images,
I've found a tutorial for using panorama cubefaces in a 3D 'world' in
Adobe AfterEffects that could be useful for this. I'll post some links
  for those who are interested.

  Cheers!

  Erik Leeman

p.s. did you also notice the hotspots?
