PanoTools:
Real benefits to using 16bit images?
joelbierling 2004-Nov-07 22:23:28
I'm processing a few hundred images that make up panos using
ptstitcher and enblend. My source images are Nikon D70 RAWs which I
understand is a "lossless" (lossy depending on who you talk to)
compressed 12bit format.
I'm just wondering if there are any real benefits in converting the
RAWs to 16bit tiffs vs. using 8bit tiffs. I know theoretically there
are benefits but doing a few comparisons between images stitched using
16bit tiffs I don't see any difference from the 8bit variety.
Ptstitcher and enblend do a great job with 8bit images. Are they
supposed to do a better job with 16bit images?
Am I missing a situation where 16bit is going to result in a higher
quality image or am I just not looking at my test images with a
critical enough eye? Obviously, the smaller 8bit images process
faster and take up less storage space.
Thanks,
-Joel
