PanoTools:
Minolta/Sony-DSLR with Anti-Shake/Super Steady Shot: Optimizing lens parameters
jot_mateng 2006-Jul-07 11:25:55
Dear Konica Minolta/Sony DSLR users,
I'd like to share my recent insights with the Sigma 8mm/f4 and a
Konica Minolta Dynax (Maxxum/alpha) 7D. These insights should be also
applicable for the Dynax (Maxxum/alpha) 5D, the new Sony alpha 100
and differnet lenses.
The named cameras have a rather unique feature in the DSLR-world. It
is called "Anti-Shake" by Konica Miolta and "Super Steady Shot" by
Sony. Both features are technically the same. The image sensor is
shifted to compensate for motion-blur at longer exposure-times.
Testing my new Sigma 8mm/f4 led to a situation when I used the
feature while shooting a spherical pano with 4 shots.
Back at home I tried to optimze the resulting images (PTGui as a
frontend for panotools). At first I only aptimized the parameters
fov/a/b/c. I was somewhat disappointed by the results.
I checked every parameter and noticed, that I had to use different
adjusted circles in the crop-window to crop out the circle of the
fisheye. After that it was obvious that the "Anti-Shake" had done
it's job and had shifted the sensor out of the optical axis.
After that I optimized fov/a/b/c for all images and d/e individually
for every shot. No need to say, that I received improved results with
the new settings.
I don't really know, whether it makes sense to also optimize d/e for
every shot, if you use a IS-lens with Canon, or a VR-lens with
Nikon...
