Installing PanoTools on Linux, libpano12.so issues

Hi all,
I had PanoTools running great on RH 7.0, with blackdown.org's java port,
but due to an unfortunate accident with windows I had to re-install
(Windows allowed an installer to kill some of my partition tables,
fortunatly not /home.)
I re-installed RH 7.1, and downloaded and installed Sun's java jdk1.3.1
to it's default location of /usr/java. Running it's java program on the
ptpicker.jar file reported: Could not load library pano12. This was the
case with either the libpano12.so dated Sep 5 2000 or the correct one
from the LINUX folder dated Oct 20 2000 copied to /usr/lib.
I then downloaded and installed blackdown.org's j2sdk1.3.0 into
/usr/local/j2sdk1.3.0. It worked great with the correct/newer library
file.
In summary, I have the contents of the different panotools downloads in
a folder in my user directory. As root I copied the libpano12.so from
the LINUX archive to /usr/lib. Then from my user account, in my
panotools directory I typed java -mx32m -jar ptpicker.jar (remember to
set the PATH to your java executable or type it) and was able to use the
program right away.
I searched the postings since the end of april when I subscribed and
found a couple of others who have run into what seems to be the same
problem:
