PanoTools: Printing Large Panos - Workarounds for Qimage Problems? Jim Peterson 2004-Nov-23 04:32:23

Hi all -

I've occasionally seen folks here mention the benefits of using Qimage
to print panoramas, so I decided to give it a try. My results were
distinctly mixed: Qimage makes great prints, sharper than Photoshop,
when working with what I consider medium size panoramas (e.g., 8.3 x
32 inches=21 x 81 cm). But Qimage will not open image files greater
than 32768 pixels on a side, and it has (in my experience) serious
bugs and deficiencies even when working with files considerably
smaller than that limit. My panos just keep getting bigger, and those
issues mean that Qimage won't work for me when I need it the most.

But it occured to me that there might be some alternatives to Qimage
that would accomplish the same thing. Qimage's basic trick is to
upsample the image to the "native" resolution of the printer, and then
sharpen it, before sending it to the printer driver - so I tried the
same trick manually in Photoshop. That did indeed give some
improvement in sharpness, but it was not the equal of Qimage. The
reason, most likely, is that Qimage has several resampling methods
available (e.g., Pyramid, Lanczos) that Photoshop doesn't support.

So here's my question for anyone who has an answer: are there other
image editing tools out there (preferably freeware or inexpensive ;-)
that support the reasmpling methods used by Qimage when resizing and
upsampling an image? If so, could you share your experiences and tips
on using them?

Thanks! -Jim
