Sorry for overruling your additions to the wiki main page.
1) "Platform neutral" software does not exist. Photoshop plug-ins
depend on Photoshop and as such are not platform neutral. Photoshop
is their platform wich in turn depends on either Windows or Mac (and
some plug-ins are Windows or Mac specific).
2) "client viewer" are a functional division and as such subordinated
to platform (see below).
3) For a navigation to be effective the number of links should be
limited(usability theory often cites the magic number of five to
seven options as a maximum an average human can take).
This imposes the choice of one criterium to which all subsequent
critierias are subordinated. It is a necessary compromise. I believe
strongly that this criterium should be determined by the user's need
as opposed to the developers needs. The main target users here are
the panographers, as opposed to sourceforge.net where the main target
users are mostly developers and a software map based on functional
divisions makes more sense than one based on platform divisions.
To cite the former German chancellor Helmut Schmidt: "if I sell you
something, I'll talk your language aber wenn Sie mir was verkaufen
wollen, dann muessen Sie Deutsch reden.
As a developer you are "selling" your tools to the panographer and as
far as software is concerned, the primary criteria for the
panographer is the platform: if he as none he will look at existing
platforms and chose the one that offers the most variety of software.
If he has one he will look for the software available for that
specific platform.
I have added Java as a platform since it is more or less ubiquitous
and it is safe to assume that most java software will run on all
platforms for which Java exists (correct me if I am wrong).
