If shooting on a tripod, with a remote control and auto bracketing so
that you don't touch the camera while the bracketed image is taken,
wouldn't the brackets be 100% aligned and therefore suitable to tone map
as a complete stitched pano instead of tone mapping the bracketed source
images before stitching, if the exact same stitching parameters are
applied to the separate bracketed sequences? Shouldn't the bracketed
stitched pano be just as aligned as the bracketed source images?

Your this technique would need an exact - _very_ exact - shooting setup.

You need 100% aligned brackets. If one of the brackets is off by a few
pixels, it will spoil sharpness of your final panorama. I would only
recommend doing this, if you want to create low resolution light probes.

If you want to create the panorama for display or print use, i'd
recommend stitching the tonemapped images. With Photomatix you can
align the brackets during the HDR creation process. Although, this can
be a little awkward if you want to re-run the tonemapping process (No
batch tonemapping of HDRs possible in Photomatix).
