With that background, it sounds like you could really enjoy Hugin
(http://hugin.sourceforge.net/), which works well under Linux and OSX, and
is fully open source. Though it has some rough edges, Hugin is an
amazingly capable application, offering a variety of unique capabilities,
including its own fast stitcher, automatic or user-configured vignetting
correction, chromatic aberration correction, and more (including the
requisite interoperation with Hugin and autopano-sift).
