PanoTools NG: Re: Which viewer to use... hmmsomethingelse 2006-Sep-09 00:00:49
Yup I had a new dell the other day. Already had sun java which was
nice. Less nice was all the dell junk trialware.

Generally I reckon people will get java when they need it for things
like online banking, they will trust their bank when they tell them to
install it. The ocasional software needs it too.

Quicktime people will get with itunes, ipods, to watch movie trailers
maybe and because some multimedia software like the britannica needs
it installed for the cdroms to work. I suspect less cdroms install it
now but it used to be quite common.

A quick alternative is devalvr which is only a mb or so and plays qtvr
mov files just like quicktime, basic ones anyway. Or shockwave is a
fairly easy download if you put panos in that.

However I think many ordinary users, quite rightly, will not install
anything unless told to by an authoritative source ie not some pano
site. They just can't distinguish bettween good and evil software and
anyway dont want to mess up their computer. Many offices are very
scared of touching their setup. I don't know what you do about these
users, all I can think of is to put a plain jpg and instruct them to
squint as they pan their eyes accross...
