It's the 'correct' projection if you intend to line the walls of a
circular room with a single panorama.
It is also one of the native formats for QTVR.

It is an efficient way of storing/transmitting spherical images as
the angular resolution is the same throughout (unlike cubic or
equirectangular). The DevalVR viewer uses it.
