This problem can also be seen when using Nikon Capture4. Many images,
processed within Capture4 and "saved" to tif, cannot be successfully opened
within PhotoshopCS (have not tried with earlier versions). My current
(hopefully temporary) solution is to convert to tiff within Capture4, and
then go through the additional step of converting .tif to .tif using "Image
Converter and Editor"

This software costs US$30. Too bad because .tiff is well known, stable, and
Nikon, Adobe (and others) shouldn't be putting out amateurish software that
unnecessarily costs us time/money. Using a binary editor I managed to locate
some improper tagging done by Nikon. My suspicion is that ptassembler does
something similar.
It is quite easy for Nikon to correct this issue, and Adobe to ignore these
tags and properly input the offending file(s). A pox on both of their
houses.
