I think the D70 Raw format is lossy in the sense that it doesn't
linearly sample the 12bit A/D output, but instead uses a mapping curve
to cram the 12bit output of the sensor into 9.4bits, to save space, and
enable high frame-rate RAW performance.  See:

So you'd probably notice a smaller difference if you use dcraw (or
whatever) to decode the NEF raw files into 16bit TIFFs vs. 8bit, than
doing this with other cameras' RAW images.
