Here's another way to do "smart sharpening", keeping the sharpening effect
only to areas where it's needed:

Yet another approach is to duplicate the layer, apply whatever
sharpening looks good for the mid-tones, then exclude the shadows and
highlights by using Layer Style > Blending Options > Blend If ....
For example: duplicate a layer, then double-click on the icon of the
duplicated layer in the Layers tab.
The Layer Style dialog appears.
At the bottom of this window is the "Blend If" section. In the "This
Layer" section, slide the stops away from the extreme ends. For a
smoother transition, option/alt click half of a triangle indicator to
split it.
In Photoshop "help" search on "To specify a tonal range for blending
layers"
This apparoach is also useful if you are applying unsharp mask in an
"ordinary" way and want to either avoid sharpening the noise is the
deep shadows OR introducing 'plus white' pixels in the highlights.
Aside... Dear Adobe: Will Unsharp Mask be NONDESTRUCTIVE in the
next version? Please? (Try to catch up with After Effects, people!)
