I use this script:
http://senbee.free.fr/scripts/Senbei_accentuation.atn
which results in creating 3 layers:
1) white sharpening lines
2) black sharpening lines
3) medium values sharpening
as explained there (in French, alas):

The above description of the 3 created layers is approximative, the 
main point is that the opacity of each layer is adjustable and you 
can add a mask to each of them, too ...

A panorama oriented question: When ? (in camera / RAW processor / 
equirectangular intermediate / tiles)
