PanoTools NG: Help with selection of a proper Panning head montanajimbo2001 2007-Dec-04 20:54:22
Hi,
I would appreciate some constructive coaching regarding pan head
assemblies that might work for me that makes more sense that what
I've come up with so far. I am new at Pano's and just don't know what
equipment is out there as yet. I want to do single row 360's using a
4 x 5 and / or an 8x10 view camera... I would also like to work into
360/180's using a D2x. What I have come up with so far are products
by Manfrotto... They have a 303Plus Precision Pan Head and also a
303SPH Multi Row Pan Head. I feel that 303Plus which is rated at a
gear weight of 11 lbs will work but only for a 360 rotation. The
303SPH is only rated at 8.8 lbs so I'm nervous about going their...
The latter would be the best solution as it would do everything. I
will never use the 303SPH with a 4x5 as intended (360 x 180 pano's).
I would only go that way using a D2X or a 35mm …maybe a med format
film camera. What I don't want to do if I can help it is buy two
heads as that's fairly spendy. If anyone has been thru this or knows
or other options please let me know. Has anyone added another
precision rail assy or ?? To a 303plus to get to a SPH
configuration. Their is a part a 303SPHUG which consists of
everything in the 303SPH except the rotation unit but tit's not cost
effective to go that way I think ( almost 500 US) I have done some
Pano work using the 4x5 and really like what I'm getting so far so I
want to be able to deal with the weight.

Jim
