Well, it appears the upper and lower shutter curtains do
A) not move at the perfectly synchronized speed, so the gap between them gets thinner as it travels across, or
B) they are in sync, but accelerate slightly during their move.

Notice how thin the gap is at 1/4000s exposure time setting, and how wobbly these curtain blades seem. And it actually appears in this video as if they start out slow and then accelerate?.
