Gimp panotools plugin (Linux)

Hello,
my first post :). I run gimp 2.2.9 under Debian Linux.
I have installed the gimp plugin from panotools.sf.net (Panorama Gimp
plug-in NG). I get two new menus filters->pan controls and
filters-->panorama tools.
1. pan controls items always fail with: "Could not read Preferences"
2. I tried to follow Dersh's tutorial using panorama tools-->adjust. I
produces an extracted image of the correct size but containing nothing
recognisable.
Help appreciated:
a) Has anyone got this working in a similar environment?
b) Should I really be using the corresponding Debian package?
