That is more-or-less the current state of the art for panorama
stitching on Linux.

You should be able to do most of the conversions between different
projections with the 'remap' part of the PanoTools plugin.

The best tool for extracting 'photos' from an equirectangular
panorama is still pteditor, though there are many things about it
that could be improved.

A fairly up-to-date list of available panoramic photography tools
for Linux:

http://wiki.panotools.org/Category:Software:Platform:Linux

...though there are some peripheral things missing (krita, pfstools,
vips, probably other stuff ...)

This (PanoTools) list is relevant for anything to do with digital
panoramic photography. Questions about usage of software tools
(including hugin and the gimp plugins) are certainly on-topic here.

There is a panotools-devel list for technical things concerning
building or developing the remaining Open Source parts of the
'panorama tools' - Stuff that would otherwise be of no interest to
the vast majority here:

http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/panotools-devel

The ptx list is more like a typical Free Software list that you
might be familiar with:

https://www.email-lists.org/mailman/listinfo/ptx

It is various things: a hugin users list, a hugin developers list
and a general panorama-on-linux list.
