Thanks for the quick and informative responses, everyone.

Hans, I suppose you mean no distortion at 24mm?  Seems I should experiment 
more with the 12-24.

I'm not too worried about pans where I don't have to worry about movement, 
but with the World Cup (I live in Germany) coming up I decided it is 
finally time to learn how to shoot high quality action pans - and 
quick!  Was hoping the 12-24 would suffice, but it seems signs are pointing 
to an 8mm or the 10,5.
