Just as a matter of interest;
What are the fruits that we are looking for?
1.
If there were ads on the site then that would probably help with revenue?

2.
Help bring customers to the site?
Customers usually aren't particularly interested in a lot of the details,
especially some of the esoteric stuff, though it may just demonstrate to the
customer how non-trivial (or trivial?) spherical panoramas are. Not a strong
case for all this extra(hardware).
3.
Help potential customers find panographers?
Again the wiki and mailing list are not going to be of great interest to
them.
4.
Bring more like minded people together?(panographers/hi-res
photographers/etc.)
This, at first impression, looks like a fine ideal. I think the problem is
that most people with these interests/hobbies also have a good understanding
for getting around the internet and have either already found this
community, or could if they wanted to.
5.
Some other piece of fruit?
