Hello Matt,

Thanks for sharing your findings with us. Your conclusions are very
interesting, and i'm sure, many of us can learn a lot from them!

Here are some things that came into my mind while reading your post:
- You are using a system with a decent amount of RAM. Let's say, during
stitching, there are still more than 2GB RAM not used by PTGui. This RAM
is used for file system caching. At the same time you're using a 2GB
iRAM disk. So, IMHO this means, most of the data during your speedtest
may never be written out to iRAM. Besides the fast seek time of RAM
disks, this may explain why the iRAM performs better than the Harddisk
although the HD has a better data throughput...
- If speed is your primary aim, you may think about investing some
research on the software side. E.g. PTGui writes huge temporary files
for every transformed input file containing the whole panorama with the
transformed image within. Nona (Hugin) offers TIFF_m (cropped TIFF)
output: this only the actual image region and the position information
inside the final panorama, a huge difference, which can be 1/100 or less
in size if you do Gigapixel panoramas.

Best regards
Bernhard
