I wouldn't say i'm an absolute newbee but there still is a lot to be
learned. You are right in assuming that I stitch first and then merge,
and I quickly found out that my EF100mm USM macro changes magnification
with focus distance. I also couldn't help but notice those geometry
issues : )
Stacking first and stitching later would be my method of choice, but I
see some huge mechanical accuracy problems on that route AND my
preference for (sadly everchanging) natural light does not allow for it.
But indeed the photomacrography forum is a better place to discuss
these things.
For now I just want to know if Helicon Focus can handle very large 16
bit images and what quality can be expected for that rather steep
pricetag.
