Could someone on the list explain how to make a custom viewer using selected
class files and building a new .jar file?

Ditto.

JMF is very cool, but not very practical at this point.

If JMF could still be used with PTVJ as a seperate applet,
I think it would be better as it would  keep the size of the basic
viewer applet to a minimum.

The idea of adding features to PTVJ as small add on components
is very appealing.  If you don't need the feature, then you don't use the
extra class.
