A few weeks ago I saw a field researcher in the forrest with a Trimble
GPS device. It had a donut sized antenna on a yellow pole sticking out
of his backpack. He was making notes about specific plants, so the
device seems to be accurate to within a few inches. Nowadays the various
city and county surveyors are also outfitted with Trimbles.
It may be that they make use of the WAAS satellite, which would be no
good in Europe according to Bernhard Vogl's post. But at least here in
California it seems Trimble is the brand.of choice.
