A lot of the "professional" equipment use microwave or radio, or even laser
(we used to use lasers that reached over 1 mile when doing off-shore work.)
You set up the base station on a monument, or on a very exact position, then
the hardware/software calculates your position from the base station.

Trimble uses GPS and boasts accuracy up to 30cm - "Depending on the
environment and . . . equipment."

The "doughnut" sounds like one of Trimble's Radio antennas. It's used with
their virtual reference system (base station) and uses an internal radio to
work with the base station.

Here's an interesting link - http://www.trimble.com/srv_new_era.shtml
Partially outlining the GPS upgrades under way.

So if you are purchasing a new GPS, make sure it will support the new Civil
Signal (L2C). The L2C signals are scheduled to be available on certain GPS
satellites in this year.

A few weeks ago I saw a field researcher in the forrest with a Trimble
GPS device. It had a donut sized antenna on a yellow pole sticking out
of his backpack. He was making notes about specific plants, so the
device seems to be accurate to within a few inches. Nowadays the various
city and county surveyors are also outfitted with Trimbles.

It may be that they make use of the WAAS satellite, which would be no
good in Europe according to Bernhard Vogl's post. But at least here in
California it seems Trimble is the brand.of choice.
