I wonder what the guys who did that sucessfully would say. Is the use of GPS
critical? Was that due to the difficult conditions (like the wind, etc)?

For what it's worth, hovering a helicopter in exactly one spot is -very-
hard (I fly RC heli's, and the big ones have the same issues). A helicopter
hovering is essentially balancing on a hemispherical bubble of air created
by the rotor wash, and is always trying to "fall off" on one side or the
other. If you watch a pilot hovering, you'll see constant stick movements...
It looks easy to hold still until you've tried it, "and then there's the
wind" :)
